Brakes rarely fail without warning. Most of the time they tell you — in sounds, in how the pedal feels, and in how the vehicle behaves when you slow down. Here are the signs worth acting on, and what each one usually means.

Sounds

  • Squealing or screeching when you press the pedal is often the built-in wear indicators: the pads are getting thin and are due to be looked at.
  • Grinding is the urgent one. Metal-on-metal noise usually means the pads have worn through, and continuing to drive can damage more of the braking system. Get it checked promptly.

Feel

  • A soft or spongy pedal, or one that travels farther than it used to before the brakes bite, points to a problem somewhere in the system.
  • Vibration or pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel as you slow down is another sign the brakes need attention.
  • Longer stopping distances — needing more room than you used to — should never be ignored.

Behavior and lights

  • Pulling to one side when you brake can be a brake problem — or an alignment problem. Both need checking, and a shop that does brakes and alignments under one roof can sort out which it is in the same visit.
  • A brake warning light on the dash means the vehicle has flagged something itself. Don't wait on it.
