A truck on the alignment rack at Southern KY Tire Pros in Glasgow, KY

An alignment sets the angles of your wheels so the vehicle tracks straight and the tires wear evenly. When those angles are out, the vehicle usually tells you — in how it steers, and in how the tires wear.

The signs you feel

  • The vehicle pulls to one side on a straight, level road
  • The steering wheel sits off-center when you are driving straight
  • The steering feels different after a hard pothole or curb hit — a sharp impact can change the angles, and the change in feel is the clue

The signs you can see on the tires

  • Edge wear — the inner or outer edge of a tire wearing faster than the rest of the tread
  • Feathering — tread that feels smooth running a hand one way across it and sharp the other way
  • Cupping — uneven dips across the tread. Cupping can also point to balancing or worn suspension parts, which is why a good alignment check looks at the whole front end, not just the angles

When to have it checked even without signs

After new tires, and after any lift, leveling, or lowering kit — any change to ride height changes the alignment angles. (When we install a kit here, the alignment is on us.)
