A transmission rarely fails without warning. It usually asks for attention first — quietly at the start, then louder. Knowing the early signs is the difference between a repair and a replacement.
If you drive an automatic, watch for:
- Delayed engagement. You shift into drive or reverse and there is a pause before the vehicle starts to move. Let it engage on its own — revving against the pause makes it worse.
- Slipping. The engine revs higher than the speed you are gaining, or a gear lets go under load instead of pulling.
- Late or hard shifts. Shifts that arrive later than they should, or land with a jolt instead of smoothly.
If you drive a manual, watch for:
- Hard shifting or grinding going into gear, or a vehicle that pops out of gear on its own.
- A clutch pedal that feels wrong — sticks, feels spongy or loose, vibrates, or grabs in a different place than it used to.
- Revving without matching speed after you shift — the clutch slipping instead of holding.
Either type: a burning smell while you drive, fluid spots where you park, new whining or humming that follows your speed, or a warning light on the dash. Any one of those is a reason to get it looked at promptly — transmission and clutch problems do not fix themselves, and caught early, the job is smaller.
