Most breakdowns on a road trip are not surprises. They are maintenance items that were already giving small warnings — a slow crank, a soft pedal, a tire losing air — that a trip's worth of loaded highway miles turned into a problem far from home. Glasgow sits about 15 minutes from I-65 Exit 53, so trips out of here start with real highway running. These are the checks worth making before you go.
Tires: tread, pressure, and the spare
- Pressure first. Check all four cold, set to the number on the driver's door placard — not the maximum printed on the sidewall. Underinflated tires run hot on long highway stretches, and heat is what tires die of on trips.
- Tread and wear. Look for wear down to the wear bars, one edge wearing faster than the other, or any bulge or crack in a sidewall. Uneven wear found now is an alignment conversation; the same wear found in another state is a tire purchase.
- The spare. Spares lose air sitting in the trunk. Check it too — a flat spare turns a simple tire change into a tow.
- A shake at highway speed. If the vehicle vibrates between 55 and 70 in town driving, a trip will not improve it. Get it balanced and checked before the miles stack up.
Brakes: don't start a trip on a warning sign
Squealing, grinding, a pedal that feels soft, or a vehicle that pulls when braking are all reasons to have the brakes looked at before a trip, not after. Mountain grades and loaded stops ask more of brakes than Glasgow traffic does, and brake signs do not get better with miles.
Battery: the quiet one
A battery that cranks a little slower than it used to is giving notice. Heat and age wear batteries down, and they tend to quit at rest stops and gas stations. A battery and charging-system check before a trip is quick, and it answers the question while you are still in a position to do something about it.
Fluids and the small stuff
Oil level and condition, coolant, and the rest of the fluids are the trip basics — a long run at highway temperature is the worst time to find out one was low. Wiper blades that streak and any bulb that's out belong on the same list; a rainstorm two states away is a bad time to discover either.
Close to home, there is a net
If something does go wrong near Glasgow, existing customers get free towing within 15 miles of the shop. Farther out, the checks above are what keep the trip boring — which is what you want.
